What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an innovative alternative to traditional orthodontic technologies such as braces. Braces use a system of brackets and wires (usually metal, but sometimes ceramic to be more discrete) to straighten your teeth. Occasionally these braces are even placed on the back or “lingual” side of your teeth
Invisalign, on the other hand, uses a series of clear plastic aligners to do the job instead. These aligners apply gentle pressure to the teeth. This pressure is what gradually moves the teeth into the desired position.
Every two weeks, the aligners are swapped for the next set in the sequence. This ensures a consistent level of pressure throughout the course so that the teeth keep moving properly.
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?
A course of Invisalign can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the severity of the case.
Generally, using Invisalign takes less time than using conventional orthodontic braces. This allows 6-12 month treatment times to be very common, but more advanced cases will always require that bit more time.
What Are the Advantages to Invisalign?
The obvious advantage of the Invisalign system is, obviously, that the aligners are clear. They’re completely unnoticeable at a distant, and generally unnoticeable at close range. Many patients have reported that close friends and family have been unaware of the aligners until explicitly told.
This is a powerful advantage for professionals who place a high standard on their appearance, or those professionals who are contractually obligated to keep their teeth clear (models, presenters, actors, etc.)
But that’s not all. Invisalign aligners are also user-removable. There are no special dietary requirements like there are with traditional braces. There are no special cleaning instructions. You eat, brush, and floss just as you normally would. Once you’re done, simply pop the aligners back in and you’re good to go.
And lastly, studies show that patients feel Invisalign is much more comfortable than traditional fixed orthodontics
What’s The Process Like?
It all begins with a consultation with your dentist, where you’ll discuss whether Invisalign is a suitable treatment for you. From there, a fully digital scan will be taken of your teeth. This digital scan will form the foundation of the rest of the Invisalign treatment.
Using advanced computer mapping technologies, the Invisalign system is able to plan — and illustrate — your entire course of treatment in just a few moments. You’ll be able to see how the digital copies of your teeth move and change over time into the desired position. This simulation is a highly accurate, if not quite 100%, representation of what will happen to your actual teeth with the aligners in place.
The dentist will have the chance to assess and alter the treatment plan and show it to you before it’s locked in. Then, both the scan and the plan are sent away for the manufacturing process to begin on the aligners themselves.
A few weeks later, and your first series of Invisalign aligners will have arrived. Your dental hygienist will walk you through how to use and care for the aligners to achieve the best results possible.
Is There Anyone Who Can’t Get Invisalign?
There’s no age limitation on Invisalign. If you’re old enough for braces, you’re old enough for Invisalign. However, there are few things which might make someone less than an ideal candidate.
Firstly, teenagers are generally not considered suitable. Because the aligners are removable, there’s a risk they won’t remember to put them back in — or will choose not to. It’s up to the dentist and parents’ discretion whether they think a teenaged patient is suitable.
This also goes for adults who don’t think they’ll remember to put the aligners in, or who don’t feel they can trust themselves. The aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day.
Secondly, Invisalign is not suitable for all orthodontic cases. The technology is constantly evolving and adapting to treat broader ranges of cases, but for now there are still limits. Generally, Invisalign is best suited to mild to medium tooth misalignment (or ‘malocclusion’)
