Comprehensive Oral Exams Near You

When someone says preventative dentistry, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Some might say regular brushing and flossing, and others might say dental cleanings. But what about dental exams?

It can be easy to mix up dental cleanings and a dental exam, but they aren’t the same thing. Both processes aim to reduce dental issues and boost your oral health. While a cleaning focuses on, well, cleaning, an examination focuses on early detection.

What Does an Oral Exam Consist of?

Oral exams are typically performed when you come in for your dental hygiene appointment.

This will be done prior to your cleaning. Your dentist will thoroughly evaluate your mouth and take a series of x-rays. This will help them develop a more detailed picture of your oral health and see areas in your mouth that cannot be detected with the naked eye. Your dentist will also perform routine screenings for oral cancer, gum disease, and tooth decay or infections. If they notice anything out of the ordinary, they’ll be sure to let you know.

Afterward, a dental hygienist will clean your mouth, removing bacteria, and plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums, and provide you with the fluoride treatment.

Your visit will most likely last about an hour, however, it is dependent on your age, and the extent to which your teeth require care.

As a rule of thumb, most dentists will recommend that you come in to receive an oral exam and a cleaning at a dental clinic near you approximately every six months. If you’re looking to come in just for an exam, do so once a year. But again, it does depend on what your dentist thinks is best. Those with chronic dental issues may be advised to come in every four months or so.

The Types of Oral Exams in Calgary

Most people don’t know that there are variations in the type of dental exam that you can receive.

The first and most common type of oral exam is a comprehensive one, as described above. As is clearly evident by the name, this consists of a detailed evaluation.

A regular oral exam is sometimes known as a “recall exam.” This exam aims to assess the state of your oral health since your last checkup. They’re also shorter in duration.

Thirdly, a limited exam focuses on a particular dental problem that you may be dealing with. Your dentist directs their efforts and attention to one area in your mouth, such as a tooth that’s decaying or broken, or a molar that may require a root canal.
